This is my 2nd Woods 90 inch finish / rough cut mower. Like others have said, the wheel spindles need to be much thicker or the whole caster arm and spindle needs redesigned similar to the old RM990 style. I have bent multiple caster yokes since purchasing and I cut almost as low as one can with the mower so the problem is in the design. I like the 3 pt hitch design better than the older model, from a 3pt pin sticking out that always made you readjust the tractor 3pt arms to the current sleeve is a much easier design for hookup. Other than the caster yoke assemblies, it has been a great piece of equipment. My favorite part is the 2 blade per spindle design which saves so much trouble over a standard blade when keeping less than ideal grounds finished. the quality of cut is great, I get complements on the fields I cut. It was a replacement for a RM990 which I wore out after 20 years but I never had caster problems with. Even with its problems, I would purchase the RD990X again.

Why doesn’t Woods make the wheel shafts thicker??? I know MANY people that have bent their wheel shafts, especially when mowing higher, which means more shims underneath and more shaft with no support. Think of the weight…there’s about 300 pounds on EACH one. When in sandier or rough terrain, they will not caster around when changing directions…so they just BEND! I’m not abusing mine at all, but have had this issue on every wheel, on multiple mowers. I just looked at a slightly used 990 and ALL the wheels were bent. BEEF up the wheel shafts, and this thing would be truly rugged. Instead, it’s nice, only if one is really careful all the time.
